Lawns. They Just Ain’t Green!
California is facing another dry year. Lawns, which never made sense out here anyway, are now well nigh impossible to maintain. My own front yard is a Mars-scape with a ginormous Modesto Ash tree plunked in the middle, fringed with assorted scraggly perennials.
More Earthly alternatives do exist. Rock gardens, for example. Or Zen gardens. Or maybe clumps of shrubbery, or ornamental grasses, or fields of clover. Yummy ground covers, like creeping thyme (some varieties are fragrance-free) and … oregano?
Better still, a victory garden would — eventually — save on gas and supermarket receipts.
My soil is almost pure adobe. Frankly, it’d make a better room addition than a garden. But as soon as the rains start (or I get impatient and haul out the hose), I’ll moisten the porcelain into a crumbly muck and put in something truly green.
